Summary

Alors qu'il se promène dans un parc avec son chien Milou， Tintin tombe par hasard sur une malette oubliée。 Il décide alors de la ramener à son propriétaire， le professeur Hallambique， qui lui dit être un éminent sigillographe （quelqu'un qui étudie les sceaux）。

Halambique est justement à la recherche d'un secrétaire pour son prochain voyage， qui doit le mener en Syldavie， afin d'y étudier un sceau très rare。 Tintin lui propose donc de l'accompagner。 Mais durant le voyage vers le pays syldave， Tintin a des doutes envers le professeur: certaines manies du savant semblent avoir disparues， et il s'est mis à fumer ！ Ne s'agirait-il pas d'un imposteur ？ Toutes ses tentatives pour le démasquer échouent， mais le doute subsiste。

Quelles sont les motivations réelles qui poussent le professeur à se rendre en Syldavie ？ Tintin décide d'enquêter。

It is one of my first books and actually the first Tintin comic that I have ever read; I was 10 years old at school when I picked up this comic book from the library。 I had a great enjoyment to read it again and discover the plot。 The story is enjoyable with good coherent events。

Very engaging adventure where Hergé creates a new country with detailed history。 Get the regular sized version: the “deluxe” undersized hardcover I had is too small to read well， especially the seizure of power documents at the end。 Highly recommended。

Tintín es otra de las series fundamentales de mi infancia lectora。 En cada una de sus entregas participamos asistimos en las aventuras de un reportero que siempre gana， a veces por su inteligencia， a veces por su intuición， a veces gracias a sus amigos， y otras muchas gracias a la pura suerte。 Pero siempre gana。 Hay una serie de personajes secundarios， arquetípicos， que sirven casi siempre como recurso humorístico （Hernández y Fernández， el capitán Haddock， la Castafiore， el despistado profesor Tintín es otra de las series fundamentales de mi infancia lectora。 En cada una de sus entregas participamos asistimos en las aventuras de un reportero que siempre gana， a veces por su inteligencia， a veces por su intuición， a veces gracias a sus amigos， y otras muchas gracias a la pura suerte。 Pero siempre gana。 Hay una serie de personajes secundarios， arquetípicos， que sirven casi siempre como recurso humorístico （Hernández y Fernández， el capitán Haddock， la Castafiore， el despistado profesor Tornasol。。）， además de Milú， que es el Robin， el Sancho Panza。 Gracias a Tintín aprendí pizcas variadas de historia， geografía y política， que me servían en aquel momento para ir creando mi mapa mental del mundo。 También algo de ciencia， porque recuerdo que Tintín descubre agua en la Luna durante un paseo， en un libro escrito en 1954。 Por cierto， llegan a la luna en un cohete impulsado por energía nuclear inspirado en un diseño de von Braun que no necesita un lander （como el Eagle） porque él solo tiene energía suficiente para aterrizar y despegar de donde sea con toda la masa del cohete。 Otro punto más en favor de la energía nuclear。 Leo en ocasiones críticas a la serie por ser racista， pero se nos olvida que está escrita entre los años 30 y 40 （alguno en el 50） del siglo XX y que lo woke por aquel entonces era no ser pronazi y poco más。 Hay en la serie momentos épicos， de los que sigo recordando 30 años después， como la pérdida de Hernández y Fernández en el desierto， moviéndose en círculos con su jeep， viendo como cada vez se unen más huellas de jeep a su camino: En conjunto es una de las series （Mortadelo， Zipi y Zape， Astérix， Lucky Luke， Tintín） de comics de mi infancia。 Sin ella intuyo que habrían cambiado muchas cosas。 A peor。 。。。more

Perhaps three is too many Tintin to read in a row。 This one felt just a little bit tedious。 Clearly these are formulaic and repetitive。 But this is the first one that seemed not to have an extra bit。 Perhaps because there was less travel than usual。 Still international intrigue again。 And bones。 There really is no reason why this one is any less good than the previous volumes。

Tintin was one of the comic book heroes of my childhood。 I'm going to read my way through the series again as I listen to a radio program about him， and his creator， Hergé。 And I'm at book 8 that is the third in a row that has no connection to the previous one。 It begins with Tintin finding a lost briefcase in the park。 He returns it to its owner， the sigillographer Professor Hector Alembick， who tells our hero that he plans to travel to the Balkan nation of Syldavia。 Of course Tintin has to com Tintin was one of the comic book heroes of my childhood。 I'm going to read my way through the series again as I listen to a radio program about him， and his creator， Hergé。 And I'm at book 8 that is the third in a row that has no connection to the previous one。 It begins with Tintin finding a lost briefcase in the park。 He returns it to its owner， the sigillographer Professor Hector Alembick， who tells our hero that he plans to travel to the Balkan nation of Syldavia。 Of course Tintin has to come along， and finds adventures， much to Snowy's dismay。 The whole thing turns out to be a plot by the leaders of the neighbouring country Borduria to be able to annex Syldavia。Historically speaking， this book is very interesting。 It is written / published in 1938-1939， and it is an satire on the way Nazi Germany annexed Austria in March 1938。 One of the people Tintin has to deal with in this adventure is an agitator by the name Müsstler which comes from combining the names Mussolini and Hitler。 Hergé begins writing whit book not long after Austria is annexed， and completes it shortly before the invasion of Poland。 The fact that he is writing it at that point in history is quite interesting。 It feels like a brave book on his part， but it also shows just how far he has got in terms of storytelling。 It is plotted quite well， and he writes an convincing backstory of these fictional countries。 If one is to compare that to the first one， Tintin in the Land of the Soviets， or even the second， Tintin in the Congo， one can see that Hergé has developed extensively as a storyteller。 The writing is much more complex， and deeper than it had been in the beginning of his career。 And for some this book marks the beginning of the golden age of Tintin。But I don't really see it that way。 I find it interesting for both of the reasons I've just gone into， but to me he becomes too wordy。 There is so much text that it slows the action down too much， and most of the humour is a slapstick scenes involving Thomson and Thompson。 Granted， those to two really give the book a great ending。 On the whole I find it more interesting than entertaining。 Maybe it's not fair to ask for something more similar to The Black Island where adventure and humour go hand in hand。 After all the subject here is much more serious， but I can't help it， I like The Black Island just better。 Basically I find King Ottokar's Sceptre historically interesting， but not quite as fun as for example The Black Island。 If I was writing about this book from a different angle， for example if I was writing about the way Hergé was influenced by the world around him， then King Ottokar's Sceptre would be on top。 Or if I was writing about this in my previous role as a literary theory student， I would have gone for King Ottokar's Sceptre。 But I'm revisiting this comic book hero mostly for entertainment sake， so to me this was a slight let down from the previous volume。 One side note， this is the first book where the majestic opera singer， Bianca Castafiore， appears。 。。。more

“Kong Ottokars scepter” er på ingen måde mit yndlings Tintin album， men den er dog utrolig veltegnet，-skrevet， fortalt osv。Samtidig har den flere paralleller med albummets samtid i forhold til krigsoptøjerne i Europa på det daværende tidspunkt i 1938-39。 Desuden er den mindst ligeså relevant i disse tider med krigen i Ukraine。 Alt i alt， er det i den bedre ende af de tidlige Tintin albums af Hergé。

On retourne faire un tout du côté de Tintin avec : « Les Aventures de Tintin， tome 8 : le Sceptre d'Ottokar » de l'écrivain belge Hergé。 C'est qu'il y a encore pas mal de tomes en attente et pas mal de voyages à faire avec notre petit reporter intrépide avec son fidèle Milou。Cette fois， nous allons en Syldavie （une petite monarchie de la péninsule balkanique， menacée d'annexion par la Bordurie voisine， elle aussi fictive。）Tintin se retrouve au centre des conflits de la famille royale。 le symbole On retourne faire un tout du côté de Tintin avec : « Les Aventures de Tintin， tome 8 : le Sceptre d'Ottokar » de l'écrivain belge Hergé。 C'est qu'il y a encore pas mal de tomes en attente et pas mal de voyages à faire avec notre petit reporter intrépide avec son fidèle Milou。Cette fois， nous allons en Syldavie （une petite monarchie de la péninsule balkanique， menacée d'annexion par la Bordurie voisine， elle aussi fictive。）Tintin se retrouve au centre des conflits de la famille royale。 le symbole du pouvoir， le sceptre disparaît， ce qui est risqué pour la royauté et la continuité de sa dynastie。Avec cet album， c'est la première apparition de la cantatrice Bianca Castafiore， alors que les Dupond et Dupont ont une place plus importante que précédemment et font souvent rire le lecteur。Tintin trouve sur un banc de Bruxelles une serviette qui a été oubliée et décide de la rendre à son propriétaire， le professeur Nestor Halambique （un sigillographe） qui， après avoir découvert le sceau du roi Ottokar， au cours d'un congrès à Prague， doit aller en Syldavie。 En le quittant， Tintin voit que le professeur est surveillé par des ressortissants syldaves。 Lui-même est repéré， subit un attentant à la bombe qui échoue （normal）， grâce à l'intervention des Dupond et Dupont。 Tintin prend la décision d'accompagner le professeur Halambique en Syldavie sous prétexte d'être son secrétaire。En réalité， dans la famille Halambique， il y a des jumeaux…。Renseignements pris pour la « sigillographie »， elle est appelée également sphragistique : la discipline historique qui a pour objet l'étude des sceaux sous tous leurs aspects et quelle qu'en soit la date。 Elle décrit matrices et empreintes et les étudie de façon critique， du point de vue historique， artistique， technique et de la valeur probatoire : types， légendes， modes d'apposition et nature diplomatique et juridique， ainsi que les méthodes de conservation。Après ce petit cours， on retourne au livre seulement pour dire que je vais passer sur les multiples aventures et mésaventures de cet album car point trop n'en faut。Ah， ah ！ Vous avez pensé que j'allais tout raconter ？ Vous auriez trouvé cela rasoir。 C'est un peu l'ennui de chroniquer des tomes et des tomes d'une même série。 Et pourtant， j'ai toute une pile devant moi。C'est classique， c'est efficace。 de l'humour – de beaux dessins bien colorés – des réflexions philosophiques – un voyage mouvementé mais un voyage également =Un album de plus pour les « tintinophiles » qui l'auront certainement apprécié， ne serait-ce que ces belles planches illustrées。A suivre。 。。。more

So when I read Hergé's originally penned in 1939 graphic novel King Ottokar's Sceptre （in 1975 and in German）， I pretty vividly recall NOT AT ALL enjoying my reading time and with my nine year old self finding Hergé's text majorly frustrating （and the accompanying artwork presenting way too much clearly gratuitous violence）。 And indeed， according to my nine year old eyes and my ways of thinking as a nine year old， Hergé's entire storyline for King Ottokar's Sceptre was therefore awkward， much to So when I read Hergé's originally penned in 1939 graphic novel King Ottokar's Sceptre （in 1975 and in German）， I pretty vividly recall NOT AT ALL enjoying my reading time and with my nine year old self finding Hergé's text majorly frustrating （and the accompanying artwork presenting way too much clearly gratuitous violence）。 And indeed， according to my nine year old eyes and my ways of thinking as a nine year old， Hergé's entire storyline for King Ottokar's Sceptre was therefore awkward， much too male-oriented （and with the one main female character appearing as totally annoying and clown-like）， often rather difficult to understand and with far too many strange and out of the proverbial blue coincidences （as well as disgustingly cardboard like villains） for me to get any reading pleasure at all out of King Ottokar's Sceptre， except for maybe laughing a tiny bit at the accident prone Thompson and Thomson duo and how Snowy often gets himself into trouble but also kind of ends up saving Tintin multiple times。 But really， the above was not nearly enough for me to consider King Ottokar's Sceptre in any manner as a fun and an engaging story in 1975， and that in retrospect， I just had far too many textual issues following Hergé's narrative flow and found the whole scenario of the made-up Central European countries of Syldava and Borduria and their many squabbles massively tedious and wholly uninteresting。And while as an older adult， I do now see and understand that much of King Ottokar's Sceptre is obviously meant to be a biting political satire （against in particular Nazi expansion into Central and Eastern Europe and with the country of Borduria clearly meant to represent Germany and Müsstler more than likely Adolf Hitler）， sorry， but I still have not really enjoyed rereading and reencountering King Ottokar's Sceptre as an older adult reader and also think that the political satire featured in King Ottokar's Sceptre majorly tends to go above and escape from younger readers， so that in particular with this book， with King Ottokar's Sceptre， I do have to wonder who Hergé's intended audience is meant to be。 Because for me and in my humble opinion， the political satire of King Ottokar's Sceptre is much too advanced for readers below the age of twelve or so， and that Hergé's featured narrative is in and of itself not interesting and engaging enough to keep younger readers/listeners amused and focussed if they do not yet understand that basically King Ottokar's Sceptre is meant to satirise late 1930s Europe and National Socialism。 。。。more

A classic Tintin adventure that finds our earnest hero travelling to Syldavia for the first time （he returns in Hergé’s lunar themed double bill）， in the company of the mysterious Professor Alembick， sigillographer。 Embroiled in tense cross-border politics， court intrigues， and a general ripping good yarn， our doughty young reporter and his faithful canine sidekick Snowy escape numerous jams on their quest for good wholesome adventurous fun。Whilst the artwork was， as noted by other reviewers els A classic Tintin adventure that finds our earnest hero travelling to Syldavia for the first time （he returns in Hergé’s lunar themed double bill）， in the company of the mysterious Professor Alembick， sigillographer。 Embroiled in tense cross-border politics， court intrigues， and a general ripping good yarn， our doughty young reporter and his faithful canine sidekick Snowy escape numerous jams on their quest for good wholesome adventurous fun。Whilst the artwork was， as noted by other reviewers elsewhere – I originally posted an earlier version of this review on Amazon’s UK website – reworked when colourised postwar， nonetheless Hergé’s gift for beautiful crisp drawing and strong clean layout was， by this stage， more or less fully formed。 The courtly costumes are great， as are the pseudo-historical ‘tourist guide’ spreads Tintin reads on the plane to Syldavia。Hergé’s storytelling is also growing stronger; although the episodic cliffhanger moments， suited so well to the original serialised format these were first presented in， may occasionally appear contrived to adults， returning to this material， the joins probably won’t be visible to young readers。This was an early youthful favourite of mine， so I’ve a partisan soft spot for it， but it is now， like almost all Hergé’s Tintin books， simply a wonderfully innocent period piece。 That it manages to remain innocent despite Tintin’s royal（ist） imbroglio， and the political parallels between the Syldavia/Borduria dispute and the dark period of European history just then unfolding （this was originally written and published in the late 1930s） is fascinating。 Hergé certainly appears in a bolder and more favourable light here than he would if you only read Tintin In The Land Of The Soviets， or Tintin In The Congo。 Especially when one considers – though we have the benefit of hindsight – the dangers posed by the forces of fascism at this time （just before and during WWII）， who might’ve chosen to take potentially fatal offense。But ultimately， like all the Tintin adventures， this is， first， foremost， and fundamentally， good old-fashioned fun。 。。。more

What starts off as Tintin’s good deed of returning a forgotten briefcase to sigillographer Professor Alembick quickly escalates into a full-blown adventure in the fictional Eastern European land of Syldavia。 Our intrepid reporter suspects that there is a ploy to steal the royal scepter and thus force the current King Muskar XII to abdicate。 Warding off assassination attempts and dangerous ploys of the bordering （fictional） country of Borduria to seize Syldavia， Tintin and Snowy face traitors and What starts off as Tintin’s good deed of returning a forgotten briefcase to sigillographer Professor Alembick quickly escalates into a full-blown adventure in the fictional Eastern European land of Syldavia。 Our intrepid reporter suspects that there is a ploy to steal the royal scepter and thus force the current King Muskar XII to abdicate。 Warding off assassination attempts and dangerous ploys of the bordering （fictional） country of Borduria to seize Syldavia， Tintin and Snowy face traitors and enemies at every turn。Reading Tintin’s adventures as an adult means that Wikipedia gives you a lot of gossip behind Herge’s storytelling decisions。 This book was apparently his satirical criticism on the expansionist policies of Nazi Germany， in particular the annexation of Austria in 1938。 The plot， although a bit contrived， moves along at a steady pace and is interspersed with beautiful artwork。 I enjoy this book for the detailed drawings of the Syldavian countryside and the opulence of King Muskar’s royal gatherings。But there is one specific reason why this book is special: it marks the sonorous entry of the “Milanese Nightingale”， Bianca Castafiore。 As she offers a ride to an unsuspecting Tintin and the poor lad is subjected to the very first hair-parting rendition of her famed Jewel song， watching the woodland creatures run for their dear lives still cracks me up。 。。。more

For me， Tintin is a childhood memory。 We spent most holidays in France and everytime we had to go to the supermarket， my sister and I would go to the comic section and skip through the volumes while our parents got the groceries （yes， French supermarkets have comic sections）。 Not knowing much French at that point in my life， I had to rely on the visual storytelling。 So in some way， I learned how to fully enjoy comics thanks to Tintin （and some others）。I still like the adventure novel style of th For me， Tintin is a childhood memory。 We spent most holidays in France and everytime we had to go to the supermarket， my sister and I would go to the comic section and skip through the volumes while our parents got the groceries （yes， French supermarkets have comic sections）。 Not knowing much French at that point in my life， I had to rely on the visual storytelling。 So in some way， I learned how to fully enjoy comics thanks to Tintin （and some others）。I still like the adventure novel style of the Tintin stores。 And because I slightly prefer the less fantastical ones， I really like LE SCEPTRE D'OTTOKAR。 It has an engaging， fast paced story that makes me forget some minor issues （like how easy it is for a random guy to get into the royal palace）。 I do also appreachiate the background of the interwar Balkans which adds another nice layer to the story。 There are even some subtle elements that frame the fictional aggressors as the axis powers （like the Messerschmitt plane）。 All this gives the story another， slightly darker tone that works really well for me。 。。。more
